Have you noticed that the images now tend to fade in instead of just “appear” or “be” there? It’s not a fluke, it’s an improvement I tried in order to see if I could make the site faster, but, I’m not quite sure if it is actually faster, if it is slower, or if it’s just the same … How do you feel the lurker so far? Please let me know on a comment below or in the Contact form on the site.
Problem solved and the site is up with the little updates I wanted to add. Mind you, they are only style updates, I still need some more work regarding the future features I talked about before. For now, keep enjoying the site and I’ll try for this to not happen again.
… SOPA blackout is today??? Maybe I should say the Lurker is in on it and that this was intentional… naaaa
For anyone that gets to read this, sorry :(. I was publishing a something new in RedditLurker and the sleep took over, making me delete some things that I shouldn’t have deleted in the web server, and now the site is down. I’m in hold with my host provider to see if they can fix
my screw-up this problem.
… stay tuned ??
For the ones that are following the blog (hello? ), I haven’t made much changes to the site because the ones I’m working on are kinda major and take some time. What I’m up to:
- Login with reddit.com accounts.
- Mark posts as favorites
With these three I’m sure some minor features will appear, but these are my goals as of now. Feel free to comment on this.
I got really exited when I saw all the comments in the rage comic posted in reddit announcing the site. I started working on some of the things suggested by all of you and I also created this blog so you all can keep giving me feedback so we can make RedditLurker ours.
But … I’ve only gotten
1 comment 2 comments a few so far, so …
As stated in the last post, I’ve deployed a RedditLurker that provides an RSS link for each subreddit that you’re browsing. I’m still not convinced about this feature, so if you find any errors or have recommendations please leave a comment or contact me.
I am a Google Reader user. I like the idea of concentrating all the information I care about into a single stream and feed from it in an attempt to make my brain explode. Having said that, I also include some entertainment sources to relax and laught in between tech posts. Reddit’s F7U12 feed is one of them. Now, I don’t use Google Reader straight up. I use this little nice app called feedly which takes the feeds from your Google Reader and displays them in a nicer format (can you think of another app that was build for a similar purpose?), and the posts from Reddit are not displayed that nicely. They’re shown with the title and when you open them there’s a link to the rage comic. That’s not what I want, I don’t want to load another link. So, If, you haven’t figured it out yet, the next feature I have in mind for RedditLurker is RSS and Atom feeds in the format I want them. Any thoughs, opinions, suggestions, etc welcome.
During the development of the keyboard navigation features now included in RedditLurker I wondered why the keys “J” and “K” are the ones used for navigation. Thinking logically, one (me) would image that maybe the WASD keys could be used, “D” or “S” for next and “A” or “W” for prev, or event the classic arrow keys which are self explanatory. None the less I stayed with the “J” and “K” because those where the ones requested and most used.
After browsing the intertubes for this, It looks like the HJKL keys came from UNIX and have stayed up until this day. More surprisingly is that a lot of sites commonly used have them and I didn’t know about it.
As promised in the previous post, now RedditLurker comes with keyboard navigation included. Press “J” to go to the next post and “K” to go to the previous post, and when the page ends press “J” or “K” again and the site will jump to the next page. Hope you all like it and feel free to give feedback.
Since the making of the rage comic illustrating the story behind the creation of the site, I’ve got various suggestions and/or requests for features that people would like to see added to the site. Some of these are:
- Keyboard navigation (next post, previous post, etc)
- Mobile version of the site
- Infinite scroll
I see them as fair requests because other popular sites do include most of them. Some of this features I wanted to add from the beginning but for one or other reason I didn’t. Since I’m a Google Reader user, I also want to add RSS and Atom feeds in the near future.
First thing I’ll work on is the keyboard navigation feature since It shouldn’t be that hard and I think it’ll help visitors to feel more comfortable using the site. If you have anything to say regarding features to add to the RedditLurker site feel free to leave a comment.
